8 months

Having had the week and a half that we’ve had, I gave myself a pass on writing a post about Darwin turning 8 months old on the 10th. The 8th month was rung in with MamaLee’s shoulder surgery, which meant pain, drugs, and all the baby care falling to me. And a disruption to Darwin’s relatively loose, but clearly important, schedule.
Darwin decided to stop sleeping this week, decreasing her naps from 1 to 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon to one short nap mid day from Sunday until today, when she actually had an afternoon nap that was enough to get her relatively comfortably to her 7:30 bed time. For the first time in 5 days she was asleep before 9pm. Hallelujah.
All of this sleeplessness appears to be tied to developmental stuff and possibly teething. On the 10th she said her first word (kitteeee – not surprising since we have four of them), and she is now an expert in moving from a sit into a hands and knees (and belly) position. So ready to crawl, so frustrated that she can’t yet.
Growth continues unabated. On Sunday she weighed in at 20lbs 12oz. Today, before eating, she was 21lbs even. Possible that her sleeplessness was about growing too. She’s starting to outgrow some of her 18 month clothes.
In spite of the difficult week, Darwin continues to charm us. Her singing, her excitement about food (new favorite is Indian food – every dish we have tried has been a big hit), her little hands gently grasping at my hair on the back of my neck. I love this kid.

This is the only picture I got on Sunday. It has been a long week.
